Bertel Thorvaldsen's Christ

As one of my many 2005 Xmas presents for my self I have bought a figurine of the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen‘s Resurrected Christ, which made Thorvaldsen for the rebuilding of Vor Frue Kirke (also known as the Copenhagen Cathedral) between 1817 and 1829, after its having been destroyed in the British bombardment of Copenhagen in 1807. It was executed after his return to Rome, and were not completed till 1838, when Thorvaldsen again returned to Denmark.

Vor Frue Kirke is right next to where I live.

The figurine was made out of biscuit porcelain (porcelain fired without a glaze) by Bing & Grøndahl way back in the 1890s, so it is more than a 100 years old. For most of its existence Bing and Grøndahl was the second most important producer of ceramics in Denmark. It was started in 1853 by Frederik Vilhelm Grøndahl, an ex-Royal Copenhagen Factory employee, with the help of Jacob Herman and Meyer Herman Bing who were art dealers. In 1987 it was bought by Royal Copenhagen.
