Open source will not destroy the software industry. Open source software cost money. Free does not mean that without cost.

60 % of employed in companies work on open source software in their free time.

Success in open source software: Focus – what do you do? Devotion to customers. Proprietary software forces the customer into a box. Open source software offers flexibility. Open source software means that “the customer can go somewhere else”.

Compliments vs. substitutes. The McDonalds example: You can compliment a burger with french fries or substitute the burger with a pizza. You always have to eat one type of burger.

Even though that the IT industry always talked about how they supported open standards, the prevalent strategy was lock-up of customers. Open source is more disruptive to the vendor.

Open source means sharing. Sales people are there for the customers, not licensing engineers.

Legal framework was necessary in the beginning. GPL was necessary but do not focus on this today.

No Internet would mean no OS.

The IT industry has to grow up and behave like every other mature industry. OS is a very important step in this way.

IBM and other puts money into Linux to save money from developing and maintaining different versions of UNIX.

Mix it, match it. Do not limit your software to open source. Do not just focus on the kernel. Use proprietary software up the stack where it is useful. Think of “proprietary” hardware with open source software: Tivo, iPod and so on.

Perfect substitutes are very rare. So don’t replace one thing with another. Rather seek compliments. Leverage substitutes.
